The combination of athletic and academic success achieved by Ferris State University men's ice hockey student-athlete Chad Billins (Marysville) for the 2010-11 season has earned the Bulldog junior defenseman the honor of being designated as FSU's Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year representative.
With his selection, Billins is one of 11 student-athletes representing their respective CCHA team to earn such recognition and will be under consideration for the 2010-11 CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The recipient of this league award will be announced at the 2011 CCHA RBC Financial Group Awards Banquet next Thursday, March 17, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Mich.
The faculty athletic representative at each CCHA-member school, in consultation with the head coach, selected the institution's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Each school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year subsequently serves as the school's nominee for the CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 through the fall term of the selection year to receive their school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by the 11 faculty representatives at each CCHA-member school. Voting is based on a system awarding five points for a first-place vote, three points for a second-place vote and one point for a third-place vote.
This season, Billins has presently produced a team third-most tying and career single-season high 16 points on a career-best five goals and career-most 11 assists in 36 games while ranking second in scoring among Ferris State's defensemen. The 5-10, 175-pound skater has tallied three power-play and game-winning goals apiece this campaign to with a plus four efficiency rating. Billins has also accumulated 47 blocked shots, which ranks second among the Bulldogs' leaders. A marketing major, Billins has registered at least a point in 14 contests this season while garnering a pair of two-point outings - at Alabama-Huntsville (Oct. 7) with two goals and at Bowling Green State (Jan. 7) on a pair of assists.
Billins was selected twice this season (Oct. 11 and Nov. 29) as the CCHA's Defenseman of the Week.
For his career, Billins has amassed 38 points on 10 goals and 28 assists in 103 contests. He has generated four power-play goals, one short-handed marker, and three game-winning lamplighters to date. Billins also has turned in a plus three efficiency rating and racked up 118 blocked shots during time as a Bulldog.
Billins and his Ferris State teammates will open up their 2011 CCHA Tournament play this weekend (March 11-13) with a best-of-three quarterfinal-round series against nationally-ranked Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. A 7:05 p.m. (ET) opening faceoff is scheduled for the first two games and the deciding third game if necessary.
Ferris State, under 19th-year head coach Bob Daniels, presently has a 17-14-5 overall record and concluded the regular season with a fifth-place 12-12-4-3 mark (43 league points) in the CCHA. The Bulldogs are listed among other teams receiving votes in this week's (March 7) U.S. College Hockey Online.com poll.
