Twice is nice as for the second consecutive week, a member of the 2010-11 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has earned a weekly conference honor as freshman left wing Garrett Thompson (Traverse City) has been recognized as the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Rookie Player of the Week. The announcement was made this Monday (Oct. 18) by the league office.
Thompson helped Ferris State to a pair of season home-opening victories over St. Lawrence last weekend (Oct. 15-16), which featured a three-point outing with a goal and two assists in a 4-2 series-opening victory last Friday (Oct. 15) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The 6-2, 191-pound skater also posted a plus three efficiency rating in the contest before competing in Saturday's (Oct. 16) finale but not recording a point.
This season, Thompson presently ranks tied for top team honors with his three points (1-2=3) in as many appearances. He has recorded a plus three efficiency rating in his three games.
The selection of Thompson represents the second time this season in which a Ferris State skater has received conference acclaim. His teammate, junior Chad Billins (Marysville) was tabbed as this CCHA's Defensive Player of the Week a week ago (Oct. 11).
Ferris State currently sports a 3-1-0 overall record this season after sweeping the St. Lawrence Saints this past weekend (Oct. 15-16).
The Bulldogs, under 19th-year head coach Bob Daniels, commence CCHA action this weekend (Oct. 22-23) as the Ohio State Buckeyes will provide the opposition for a two-game series in Big Rapids. The puck will drop for both contests at 7:05 p.m. (EDT) and tickets may be purchased through the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888 or via online at http://www.startickets.com/event.php?event=1772.
