The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has tabbed Ferris State University men's ice hockey senior Scott Wietecha (Wolverine Lake) as this week's (Feb. 14) recipient of the CCHA Defenseman of the Week Award as announced this Monday (Feb. 14) by the conference office.
Wietecha recorded a combined three points on a goal with two assists in a non-league series sweep of Alabama-Huntsville this past weekend (Feb. 11-12) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. With the two victories (5-2 and 5-1) over Alabama-Huntsville, Ferris State extended its current winning streak to five games as the Bulldogs are presently 16-12-4 overall with a fifth-place 11-10-3-2 record (38 league points) in the CCHA.
This past weekend, Wietecha accounted for the game's final score in last Friday's (Feb. 11) series opener with a power-play lamplighter late in the third period and also garnered an assist en route to being named the second star of the game. Wietecha would pick up an assist in Saturday's (Feb. 12) finale with a short-handed goal helper and concluded the series with a plus four efficiency rating. He also played a key role in the Bulldogs allowing only one power-play goal by the Chargers in nine such opportunities.
For this season, Wietecha has currently compiled nine points with two goals and seven assists in 32 contests while producing a plus five efficiency rating. The 6-2, 208-pound defenseman has netted one power-play marker and registered a team fifth-most 27 blocked shots.
In 119 career outings to date, Wietecha has amassed 46 points on 12 goals and 34 assists to go along with a plus 16 efficiency rating, 75 blocked shots, six power-play tallies, and three game-winning lamplighters.
The CCHA weekly award marks the second time in Wietecha's career in which the Bulldog skater has earned such recognition. He was chosen as the recipient of the award as a freshman in the 2007-08 campaign (Feb. 18).
Wietecha is the third Ferris State player this season to claim CCHA Defenseman of the Week accolades, joining Chad Billins (Oct. 11 and Nov. 29) and Zach Redmond (Jan. 10).
Ferris State, which is ranked 20th nationally this week (Feb. 14) by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO), will close out the home portion of its 2010-11 regular-season home schedule this weekend (Feb. 18-19) as the Bulldogs host the nationally-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a two-game CCHA set at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Both league contests will commence at 7:05 p.m. (EST) and this Saturday's (Feb. 19) tilt represents Bulldog Hockey Senior Night as Wietecha along with seven other seniors will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony.
