Senior Zach Redmond (Traverse City) of the nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team as been selected by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) as this week's (Jan. 10) Defenseman of the Week for his noteworthy performance in a league series sweep at Bowling Green State. The announcement was made this Monday (Jan. 10) by the CCHA office.
Redmond, who was named to Inside College Hockey.com's 2010-11 First Half All-CCHA Team, recorded a team-high combined three points with a goal and two assists at Bowling Green State this last weekend (Jan. 7-8). The 2010-11 Bulldog team captain produced two assists, including the lone helper on the game-winning lamplighter, in 20th-ranked FSU's 4-1 victory over the Falcons in last Friday's (Jan. 7) series opener at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. He concluded the contest with a plus three efficiency rating.
A 2010-11 first-team CCHA Preseason All-Conference selection, Redmond netted an unassisted goal in Saturday's (Jan. 8) 3-1 decision against Bowling Green State while compiling three blocked shots and a plus two efficiency rating.
The 6-2, 205-pound defenseman has accumulated a team-best 16 points in 17 games this season with six goals and 10 assists. The 2010-11 Inside College Hockey.com Preseason All-America Third-Team pick has posted a plus eight efficiency rating to go along with three power-play goals, two game-winning tallies, and 32 blocked shots. Redmond has four multiple-point game performances this campaign to date and has registered at least a point in 12 outings to date. His six goals this season equals a personal career single-season high.
Last season, Redmond earned CCHA Defenseman of the Week recognition three times (Oct. 26, Dec. 14, and Jan. 11) en route to receiving All-CCHA Second-Team accolades.
Redmond has amassed 86 career points on 21 goals and 65 assists in 132 contests at Ferris State. The 2008-09 team Most Valuable Player Award recipient has chalked up a plus 27 efficiency rating and 208 blocked shots while scoring 11 power-play goals, one short-handed marker, and six game-winning lamplighters.
Among the program's all-time leaders, Redmond currently ranks 27th in assists (65) and is listed 40th in points (86). The 2009-10 All-CCHA Second-Team performer was drafted in the seventh round (184th overall) of the 2008 National Hockey Association's (NHL) Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.
The selection of Redmond represents the third time this season in which a Bulldog skater has claimed CCHA Defenseman of the Week laurels.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-8-4 overall and are currently third in the CCHA standings with an 8-6-3-2 conference mark (29 league points).
Ferris State, which is presently ranked 19th in the nation this week (Jan. 10) by U.S. College Hockey Online, battles the nationally seventh-ranked Michigan Wolverines this weekend (Jan. 14-15) in a home-and-home CCHA weekend series. The Bulldogs visit Michigan in Friday's (Jan. 14) series opener at UM's Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. Opening faceoff is at 7:35 p.m. (EST) in a contest to be televised live on the CBS College Sports Network. Ferris State then hosts the Wolverines in Saturday's (Jan. 15 ) rematch at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The series finale, which will be aired live by Comcast Television, commences at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
