The nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's ice hockey team received representation on this week's (Nov. 29) Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Players of the Week list as junior Chad Billins (Marysville) was tabbed the league's Defensive Player of the Week as announced this Monday (Nov. 29) by the CCHA.
Billins accounted for the game-winning goal in a 3-0 league victory at Michigan State last Tuesday (Nov. 23) in Ferris State's only contest of the week. Billins, who tallied his game winner in the contest's opening period, finished the outing with two blocked shots and a plus two efficiency rating.
The selection of Billins represents the second time this season in which the Bulldog skater has been named the CCHA's Defenseman of the Week after previously earning the honor on Oct. 11. For his career, Billins has now been a CCHA Weekly Award recipient three times and initially claimed such recognition during his 2008-09 freshman year by garnering Rookie of the Week (Dec. 15) accolades.
This season, Billins has currently registered a team second-most seven points on three goals with four assists in 15 contests. The 5-10, 175-pound blueliner has also recorded a squad second-best 20 blocked shots while posting a plus three efficiency rating. He has netted two power-play goals and a pair of game-winning lamplighters this campaign to date. Billins has presently produced at least a point in six contests this season.
In his Ferris State career, Billins has amassed 29 points with eight goals and 21 assists in 82 games to date. He has netted three power-play goals, one short-handed marker, and two game-winning markers while chalking up 91 blocked shots and a plus two efficiency rating.
Billins' selection represents the fourth time this season in which a Ferris State player has garnered conference weekly kudos.
The Bulldogs, who are currently ranked 18th in the nation this week (Nov. 29) by Inside College Hockey.com and 20th in the U.S. College Hockey Online's (USCHO) poll, take on the Michigan State Spartans this weekend (Dec. 3-4) in a CCHA home-and-home series. Ferris State hosts MSU this Friday (Dec. 3) in a 7:05 p.m. (EST) matchup at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State presently sports a 7-5-3 overall record with a fifth-place 4-4-3-2 CCHA mark (17 league points) this season. The Bulldogs are currently midst a three-game (2-0-1) unbeaten streak.
