Ferris State University men's ice hockey junior Chad Billins (Marysville) has been chosen as this week's (Oct. 11) Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week, which was released Monday (Oct. 11) by the league office.
Billins registered a team-leading three points with a pair of goals and an assist in Ferris State's season-opening series at Alabama-Huntsville last weekend (Oct. 7-8). He netted two power-play lamplighters, which included the game winner, in the Bulldogs' 4-1 victory over the Chargers last Thursday (Oct. 7) in the 2010-11 season opener en route to being named the contest's first star. Billins then assisted on FSU's first goal in a 4-2 loss in Friday's (Oct. 7) series finale. The 5-10, 175-pound defender concluded the two-game set with a plus two efficiency rating to go with a pair of blocked shots.
Billins' two goals this season is just one shy of equalling his career single-season best of three tallies set last season in 40 outings.
The league weekly award represents the second one for Billins in a Bulldog jersey as he was a CCHA Rookie of the Week (Dec. 15) selection during his 2008-09 freshman campaign.
For his career, Billins has recorded 25 points on seven goals with 18 assists in 69 contests. He also has tallied three power-play goals, one short-handed marker, and a game-winning lamplighter while notching 73 blocked shots and a plus one efficiency rating.
Ferris State, which is currently 1-1-0 overall this season, hosts the St. Lawrence Saints this weekend (Oct. 15-16) in its season home-opening series at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Opening faceoff for both non-league contests is at 7:05 p.m. (EDT) and for tickets, please call the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
