Ferris State To Visit Western Michigan In CCHA Tournament Quarterfinals
The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will be packing its bags for the upcoming 2011 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Tournament as the Bulldogs begin post-season action by visiting the nationally-ranked Western Michigan Broncos in two weeks (March 11-13) in a best-of-three second-round series at WMU's Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The quarterfinal-round series will get underway on Friday, March 11, proceeded by game two to be held Saturday, March 12. The deciding game, if necessary, is set to take place on Sunday, March 13. All three contests are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoffs.
Ferris State, which is coming off a five-point regular-season finale series performance at Ohio State (Feb. 24-25), wrapped up CCHA play with a fifth-place 12-12-4-3 mark (43 league points). The Bulldogs, under 19th-year head coach Bob Daniels, are 17-14-5 overall this campaign and 6-2-1 in their last nine outings to date. FSU closed out the regular season at Ohio State (Feb. 24-25) by prevailing 1-0 in a shootout following a 2-2 overtime tie in the series opener (Feb. 24) and then skating to a 3-1 victory over the Buckeyes in the finale (Feb. 25). The Bulldogs are currently listed among other teams receiving votes in the U.S. College Hockey Online.com (USCHO) poll.
Western Michigan clinched home ice for the quarterfinals with a 2-0 regular-season finale triumph at Notre Dame Saturday (Feb. 26) evening in Notre Dame, Ind. The Broncos will bring a 16-10-10 overall record, which included a fourth-place 10-9-9-5 (44 league points), into the second-round series against the Bulldogs. Western Michigan is coached by first-year head coach Jeff Blashill, who played at Ferris State from 1994-98 and then spent 1998-01 as an assistant coach in the Bulldog men's ice hockey program.
The 2011 CCHA Tournament will get underway this weekend (March 4-6) as sixth-seed Northern Michigan hosts No. 11 Bowling Green State, No. 7 Alaska plays host to No. 10 Michigan State, and No. 8 Lake Superior State entertains No. 9 Ohio State in three best-of-three first-round series. Michigan, the 2010-11 CCHA regular-season champions, along with Notre Dame and Miami (Ohio) join Western Michigan and Ferris State as the top five teams receiving first-round tourney byes.
