Sophomore goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) of the nationally-ranked 2009-10 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been recognized as this week's (Dec. 7) Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Reebok Goaltender of the Week in an announcement by the league office.
Nelson stopped 56 of 57 shots for a .982 saves percentage in the Bulldogs' two-game CCHA home series sweep of nationally-ranked Nebraska-Omaha this last weekend (Dec. 4-5) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The 6-0, 174-pound netminder turned aside all 28 shots on net in Friday's (Dec. 4) 2-0 series-opening decision over the Mavericks to record his first career shutout and then made 28 stops in Saturday's (Dec. 5) 3-1 victory to help Ferris State improve its season record to 11-3-2 overall and 6-2-2-2 (22 pts.) in the CCHA.
Nelson, who played 119:54 minutes in net for the two-game set, earned Perani Cup First Star of the Game honors in Friday's tilt and was selected the third star of the game in Saturday's rematch.
This season, Nelson has compiled an 8-1-1 record in net with a 1.58 goals-against average (15 goals allowed) and a .942 saves percentage (242 saves) in 11 appearances. He has totaled 25 or more saves in a contest five times this season, which included a season-best 30 stops in a 2-2 overtime tie at nationally-ranked Miami (Nov. 13).
In 30 career contests, Nelson is 13-9-5 with a 2.18 goals-against average (59 goals allowed) and a .922 saves percentage (699 saves).
Nelson's weekly league honor represents the fifth time this season in which a Ferris State skater has garnered CCHA weekly recognition.
The Bulldogs, who have a current eight-game (6-0-2) unbeaten streak, are presently ranked 12th this week (Dec. 7) by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine, 13th in U.S. College Hockey Online's poll, and 15th by Inside College Hockey.com.
Ferris State will conclude the 2009 portion of its 2009-10 slate this weekend (Dec. 11-12) with a CCHA home-and-home series against the Western Michigan Broncos. The Bulldogs visit Western Michigan this Friday (Dec. 11) evening in the series opener at WMU's Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. (EST). The two West Michigan teams then square off again this Saturday (Dec. 12) in Big Rapids, Mich., with a 5:05 p.m. (EST) start time slated for the weekend series finale.
