The 2009-10 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been chosen to finish eighth in the annual Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Coaches Poll while the Bulldogs were selected ninth in the media poll, which was conducted this Wednesday (Sept. 30) via teleconference.

The conference's 12 head coaches and 66 media members voted in the respective preseason polls.

Ferris State earned an eighth-place 50 points in the coaches poll and received 314 points in the media poll to place ninth of the 12 conference member teams.

"The results of these polls accurately reflect the standings from last season," said Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels, who begins his 18th year behind the Bulldogs' bench this season.  "The polls tend to take on greater significance with the media and fans than they do with the coaches.  If they serve a purpose, it would be from an incentive standpoint for our team to prove the prognosticators wrong."

For the first time in four years, the coaches and media agreed upon a preseason favorite as Michigan was tops in both polls.  The Wolverines received five first-place votes with 114 points in the coaches poll and garnered 24 first-place votes with 731 points in the media poll.  The media members ranked the 12 CCHA teams in projected order of finish for the regular season. Points were awarded on a 12-11-10-9, etc., basis. League coaches ranked the CCHA teams, excluding their own school, in the order they predicted the regular season will end.

A year ago in the preseason, the Bulldogs were tabbed to place sixth in both the 2008-09 CCHA Coaches and Media Polls.  Ferris State earned 84 points in the coaches poll while chalking up a 529 points total in the media forecast.

This season, Ferris State returns 21 letterwinners from the 2008-09 team which produced a 12-19-7 overall mark with a ninth-place 9-14-5-(2) league record.  FSU, which returns 11 of its top 14 points leaders from a season ago, also welcomes back 72.5% (173-239) of the squad's points production and 71.1% (64-90) of its goal-scoring output from the 2008-09 campaign.

The Bulldogs open their 2009-10 schedule this Sunday (Oct. 4) with a matinee exhibition matchup against Wilfred Laurier (Ontario) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Opening faceoff is set for 2:05 p.m. (EDT).  The following weekend (Oct. 9-10), Ferris State will officially start its 2009-10 campaign with a two-game non-league road series against the Canisius Golden Griffins in Buffalo, N.Y.  A 7:05 p.m. (EDT) start time is slated for both contests at the Buffalo State Sports Arena and both games will be broadcast live on Big Country WWBR 100.9 FM with Dom Hennig calling the action.
