Senior Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell), who claimed medalist honors at the recently-completed 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Championships, has been tabbed as the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week in an announcement made this Tuesday (Oct. 5) by the conference office.
Wittenbach earned the weekly conference recognition for the first time in his collegiate career as a result of firing a first-place two-over par 215-stroke total (75-66-74=215, +2). His efforts helped Ferris State win the 2010 GLIAC Championships (Oct. 3-4) with a playoff hole victory after completing the three-round tournament with a first-place tying 889 team regulation score (+37) at the Grosse Ile (Mich.) Golf and Country Club course. Wittenbach recorded three birdies in the third round, which included a pair on the second nine holes, to end up plus three for the round. His best round of the tournament took place in the second as evidenced by five birdies en route to a five-under par 66 score.
Wittenbach is presently averaging a team-best 74.78 strokes per round (673 total strokes) in nine rounds this fall season. The 2009-10 Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award recipient has produced three top-20 place performances this campaign to date.
A 2009-10 GLIAC All-Academic Team member, Wittenbach has currently accumulated a 74.86 career stroke average (1,048 total strokes) in 14 rounds.
Wittenbach and Bulldogs will compete in the Tiffin Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament this weekend (Oct. 9-10) at the Mohawk Country Club in Tiffin, Ohio.
