Kurt Valley To Captain 2009-10 Men's Golf Team

Senior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) has been chosen to captain the 2009-10 Ferris State University men's golf team in an announcement made by third-year FSU men's golf head coach Mike Mignano.

Valley, a 2008-09 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team selection, also was a co-recipient of the 2008-09 Bulldog men's golf team's Most Valuable Player Award.

"Kurt has displayed unquestionable dedication to the Ferris State Men's Golf program and his teammates," said Mignano.  "Kurt will provide the leadership necessary both on and off the golf course to help our team reach its goal of winning a national championship."   

Valley enjoyed in his best season at Ferris State in the 2008-09 campaign by generating a team second-best and career single-season best 73.09 average (2,412 total strokes) in 33 rounds.  He compiled eight top-20 place performances a season ago, which featured six top-five place efforts.  Valley was honored as the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week on three occasions (Sept. 9, and April 8 & 16) this past season.

Valley earned individual medalist plaudits in two consecutive 2009 spring tournaments with a two-round 133 score at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell (April 4-5) and at the Northwood Invite (April 10-11) with a 145-stroke total in the 36-hole event.

At the 2009 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships in Blaine, Wash., Valley netted a 297-stroke total to tie for 20th place as Ferris State placed eighth of 20 teams in what equaled the program's highest-placing ever.  

For his career, Valley is averaging 74.62 strokes per round (6,940 total strokes) in 93 career rounds. He has placed among the top 20 individuals in tournament play on 21 occasions, which included 10 outings among the top five.  He was tabbed as a honorable mention All-GLIAC pick in 2007-08 along with receiving the team's Bulldog Award for dedication and hard work. 

The Bulldogs start their 2009-10 season on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Saginaw Valley State Al Watrous Memorial Tournament in University Center, Mich.  FSU will host the Ferris State Matt Pinter Invitational on Sept. 26-27 at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
