The Ferris State University men's golf team will conclude its 2008-09 season among the nation's best as the Bulldogs are listed 24th place in this campaign's fifth and final installment of the Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Rankings Poll.
The poll is currently available for online viewing at www.golfworld.com after being released this Wednesday (May 13).
FSU, which is presently making final preparations for the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship Tournament (May 19-22) in Blaine, Wash., received 51 points in the national poll. The Bulldogs moved up one place in the final poll after making its 2008-09 season debut ranked 25th in the prior balloting (April 22). The rankings for NCAA Division II men's golf is the result of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) combining their resources.
The Bulldogs, guided by second-year head coach Mike Mignano, were four points shy of garnering 23rd place as Grand Canyon (Ariz.) occupied the position. Columbus State (Ga.) maintained its top national ranking by picking up 290 points and six first-place votes. The remaining six first-place votes were divided between Georgia College and North Alabama as both schools totaled three each.
Ferris State qualified for this year's national tournament as a result of turning in a fourth-place tying 875 three-round score at the 2009 NCAA-II Midwest/South Central Super Regional (May 4-6) in Allendale, Mich.
The 2009 spring season has proven to be a highly-successful one for the Bulldogs with four tournament titles to their credit - Ashland Invitational (March 28-29), NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell (April 4-5), Northwood Invitational (April 10-11), and the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament III (April 19-20). To date, Ferris State has registered at least a fifth place or higher showing in 10 of its 11 2008-09 season tournaments.
