Men's Golf Announces 2008-09 Awards
Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) and Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) of the nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's golf team are co-recipients of the 2008-09 team's Most Valuable Player Award as announced by second-year head coach Mike Mignano.
The two juniors earned a share of the squad's top honor. Redshirt freshman Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) received the Bulldog Award for demonstrating the most dedication and hard work throughout the season.
A season ago, Lilleboe claimed team MVP kudos while Valley garnered the Bulldog Award.
Lilleboe, a two-time (2007-08 and 2008-09) All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team selection, averaged a team-leading and career single-season best 73.03 strokes (2,118 total strokes) in 29 rounds for the 2008-09 campaign. He compiled nine top-10 place performances this season, which included five among the top five individuals. Lilleboe was chosen as a co-honoree of the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week this past fall (Sept. 24).
The 2007-08 GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Year's highest placing this season was a pair of second-place tying efforts at the Grand Valley State The Arendsen Tournament (Sept. 28-29) with a 213 three-round total and a two-round 146 score at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament III (April 19-20). Lilleboe led the 24th-ranked Bulldogs to a fourth-place tie at the 2009 NCAA-II Midwest/South Central Super Regional (May 4-6) with a squad-best 213 score and produced a four-round 307 stroke total at the 2009 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships (May 19-22) to tie for 62nd place.
In his three-year (2006-09) FSU career, Lilleboe has generated a current 73.99 stroke average (5,179 total strokes) in 70 rounds of competition. He has accumulated 19 top-10 place efforts and has 11 top-five finishes to his credit.
Valley turned in his most productive season as a Bulldog with a squad second-place and career season-best 73.09 average (2,412 total strokes) in 33 rounds. Valley, who registered eight top-20 place showings with six of those being in the top five, was recognized as the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week on three occasions (Sept. 9, and April 8 & 16) this season.
A 2008-09 first-team All-GLIAC pick, Valley attained individual medalist honors in two straight spring tournaments this season - a two-round 133 score at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell (April 4-5) and at the Northwood Invite (April 10-11) with a 145-stroke total in the 36-hole event. Valley carded a 297 score to claim a share of 20th place at the 72-hole NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships in Blaine, Wash., as Ferris State placed eighth of 20 teams in the national tourney.
Valley is presently averaging a career 74.62 strokes per round (6,940 total strokes) in 93 rounds. He has placed among the top 20 individuals on 21 occasions, which includes 10 outings in the top five.
Simons recorded a 76.31 average (992 total strokes) in 13 rounds this season in initial collegiate compaign. His best performance of the season was at the Ashland Invitational (March 28-29) in which he fired a 223 three-round score to tie for sixth place honors. Simons netted a 146 at the 36-hole NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell.
The Bulldogs made their 13th all-time NCAA-II Championship Tournament appearance this season as the eighth-place finish at nationals matched the program's highest placing ever.
