Ferris State Picked To Defend GLIAC Men's Basketball Championship In Preseason Poll

Big Rapids, Mich. - The 2022-23 collegiate basketball season officially tips off this week and the Ferris State University men's basketball squad has been picked to defend its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship as the Bulldogs were tabbed first in this year's preseason league poll.

The Bulldog men's squad totaled 78 points and six first-place votes in being chosen as this year's league favorite. A year ago, the Bulldogs won the GLIAC regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Region Semifinals, finishing with a 22-9 overall record.

Behind FSU was Northern Michigan in second place, earning 68 total points and two first-place votes. Lake Superior State (3rd, 55 points) and Michigan Tech (4th, 52 points) each received one first place vote. Davenport, which made a run to the 2021 GLIAC Tournament title as the No. 8 seed, was selected fifth (50 points). The Panthers were followed in the poll by Grand Valley State (6th, 39 points), Saginaw Valley State (7th, 36 points), Parkside (8th, 34 points), Wayne State (9th, 20 points) and Purdue Northwest (10th, 17 points).

Regular season action begins in full force on Friday, Nov. 11, with seven GLIAC teams hitting the court in non-conference play.

Along with the preseason poll, the league also unveiled its preseason All-GLIAC squad as voted on by the league's member head coaches. FSU junior guard Ben Davidson and redshirt sophomore guard Solomon Oraegbu were both tabbed to the preseason All-GLIAC Second Team.

The Bulldogs will travel to Nashville to take part in a crossover classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) this weekend. FSU opens the event against the host school on Friday (Nov. 11) night at 6:30 p.m. (ET) before facing Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

The following weekend, on Nov. 18-19, FSU will then travel to Aberdeen, S.D., for the inaugural Small College Basketball Champions Classic versus a pair of nationally-ranked foes in host Northern State (S.D.) and Minnesota-Duluth. FSU will play its first two regular-season home games on Nov. 22-23 when the Bulldogs host the Ferris State Thanksgiving Classic inside Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs made their 15th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance and their sixth in the last eight years a season ago. Last year's GLIAC Championship was the program's fourth title in the past six seasons.

In the past eight years, FSU has made six NCAA Tournament appearances, claimed four GLIAC Tournament Championships, reached the NCAA Midwest Region semifinals three times, claimed four league regular-season titles and also reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen twice along with an Elite Eight berth and national title. Over the last eight seasons, the Bulldogs have now compiled a 191-63 overall record, which represents the greatest stretch in school history.
