Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball teams will start off their respective 2012-13 campaigns this weekend with exhibition games on tap.
The Bulldog women's squad, which was picked to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division for a second consecutive year, will host Calvin in a preseason exhibition game this Friday, Nov. 2, at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (ET) prior to the start of Bulldog Hockey at home as the Bulldogs make their on-court debut under first-year head coach Colleen Lamoreaux-Tate.
Meanwhile, the men's team hits the road and will square off against NCAA Division I member Loyola University on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Chicago, Ill. The game begins at 5 p.m. (ET) inside Gentile Arena. This season will mark the 11th campaign for head coach Bill Sall on the men's side.
Additionally, the Bulldog men will also host Calvin in an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena in Big Rapids. The FSU men were listed third in the 2012-13 GLIAC North Division Preseason Poll.
The Bulldog men's basketball team welcomes back eight letterwinners from last year's squad that won a share of a second consecutive GLIAC North Division Championship.
FSU ended the 2011-12 men's hoops campaign with a 16-11 overall record after winning a share of a second-straight GLIAC North Division Championship. The Bulldogs also made their 13th all-time GLIAC Tournament berth last year, including the program's fourth-straight conference tournament appearance. Overall, Ferris State has won four league titles and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament in Sall's tenure.
On the women's side, Ferris State finished the 2011-12 women's basketball season with a 23-7 overall record, which matched the school record set previously in 2006-07 for most wins in a campaign. Last year marked the 15th time in the last 16 seasons the Bulldogs have registered double-digit wins in a campaign.
The Ferris State women are ranked 17th in the Division II Women's Basketball Bulletin Preseason National Rankings along with 24th in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll after reaching the NCAA Tournament Semifinals a season ago.
The Bulldog women's squad opens the regular-season on Nov. 9-10 in the United Electric Tip-Off Classic hosted by Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. The season opener is against Cedarville (Ohio) on Friday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. (ET).
Meanwhile, the men's team opens its regular-season on Saturday, Nov. 17, at home versus Lewis (Ill.) beginning at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
Both FSU teams will open defense of their conference regular-season championships on the road as GLIAC action begins on Nov. 29 against the Lake Erie Storm in Painesville, Ohio.
Senior guard Kenny Brown (Farmington Hills/Harrison) of the men's team was chosen as a preseason All-GLIAC First Team honoree as announced by the league office while senior forward Daniel Sutherlin (Detroit/Renaissance) claimed preseson second team accolades.
A pair of Bulldog women's players were also named to the 2012-13 All-GLIAC North Division Preseason First Team in junior guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind.) and sophomore forward Christina Branch (Grand Rapids/West Michigan Lutheran).
