Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball team squares off against Saginaw Valley State in the quarterfinal-round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on Wednesday (March 2) at 7 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena.
Top-seeded FSU enters Wednesday's matchup with a 20-6 overall record after winning the GLIAC North Division Championship with a 16-3 league record. Meanwhile, SVSU is presently 13-13 overall and tied for fourth place in the division with a 9-10 conference mark. The Cardinals are seeded eighth in the field.
The top four teams earned first round home games with the quarterfinal-round winners advancing to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals and Finals on Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, at the site of the highest remaining seed. Ferris State earned the top seed and would host the semifinals/finals with a win on Wednesday night.
The other tournament quarterfinal games include: fourth-seeded Wayne State hosting fifth-seeded Hillsdale, number three seed Grand Valley State entertaining sixth-seeded Michigan Tech along with second-seeded Findlay hosting number seven seed Lake Superior State.
The winner of the GLIAC Tournament receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament slated to be held March 12-15 at a campus location yet to be determined.
Advance ticket sales for Wednesday's quarterfinal can be obtained by visiting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office located in the Ewigleben Sports Complex. Ticket prices for the league quarterfinal are $8 for adults or $2 for all students older than age five, including college students with identification.
All seats are general admission and no regular-season passes of any type such as FSU Rebounders Club or all-sports passes will be accepted per league tournament regulations.
The ticket office will offer expanded operating hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday. The Bulldog men are 8-13 all-time in 11 previous tournament appearances and reached the GLIAC Semifinals a season ago. Ferris captured the 1997-98 league tourney title and will be making its sixth appearance in the last seven years, including a third consecutive showing. However, the Bulldogs have not played at home since recording a 73-68 quarterfinal-round win over Northern Michigan five years ago (2/28/06).
FSU was ranked 21st in last week's National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 National Poll along with third in the NCAA-II Midwest Regional Rankings.
Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State played twice this season during regular-season action with the Bulldogs pulling out close wins both times. FSU beat SVSU 82-74 on the road (Jan. 8) before topping the Cardinals 70-68 at Wink Arena (Feb. 5).
This year will also mark the second-straight year the Bulldogs and Cardinals have met in the league tournament quarterfinals as FSU pulled out a 65-59 win a year ago (3/2/10) in the first round contest at University Center, Mich.
Wednesday's game will be carried live from Jim Wink Arena on local radio station Sunny 97.3 FM. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (ET) with Scott Roman calling the play-by-play action and Sandy Gholston providing color commentary.
