Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad has announced its second recruit of the year with the addition today of prep point guard Dietrich Lever (Canton).
Lever, who inked with FSU near the end of the fall signing period, will embark on his senior campaign at Canton High School this winter and join the Bulldogs for the 2011-12 season.
"We had an opportunity to watch him play over the summer and into the fall and found a scorer who's also extremely quick," said FSU head coach Bill Sall. "We've had a good line of point guards over the years here at Ferris and he fits that same mold.
"He's had a successful high school career and we believe that will carry over into his collegiate career here at FSU," he added.
The 5-10 Lever ranked among the state's top scoring leaders and averaged 19.5 points along with seven assists per game as a junior in 2009-10 for Canton. He also compiled more than three steals per contest and has led the squad in both scoring and assists each of the last two campaigns.
As a junior, Lever netted 448 points and shot 44% (150-338) from the floor in 23 contests as the squad's starting point guard.
Lever earned first team all-conference accolades as a junior under prep head coach Jimmy Reddy and plans to pursue a career in sports management at Ferris State. He was also an Ann Arbor News All-Area honoree.
A four-year letterwinner, Lever is a cousin of former NBA star Lafayette "Fat" Lever. He helped guide the Chiefs to a 16-7 overall record a season ago along with a co-division title and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A district final appearance.
A year ago, Lever closed out his junior season in spectacular fashion by scoring 25 points or more in three consecutive outings to finish the year. He also took part in the 2009 MHSAA/Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Reaching Higher Boys Basketball Showcase.
Lever has played AAU basketball with Team Detroit.
"He had a good season over the summer and we're thrilled he's decided to become a Bulldog," said Sall. "We certainly expect him to help us in the future and we're happy he made the decision to come to Ferris."
Lever joins 6-10 prep big man Jared Stolicker (Middleville/Thornapple-Kellogg) as FSU's fall signees in the class of 2011.
Ferris State is off to a 3-0 start this campaign and presently ranked 24th nationally in this week's (Nov. 23) National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Poll.
The nationally-ranked Bulldogs will try to keep their unbeaten streak on the line as they take part in the Owensboro (Ky.) Classic this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27, at the Owensboro Sports Center in Owensboro, Ky. The Bulldogs face two more challenging regional foes with games against Drury (Mo.) on Friday (Nov. 26) and nationally-ranked host Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday (Nov. 27). Both tipoff at 9 p.m. (ET).
