Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will officially tipoff the 2010-11 season at home this Saturday (Nov. 13) evening as the Bulldogs host longtime West Michigan opponent Calvin in a 7:30 p.m. (ET) non-league tilt at Jim Wink Arena.
Saturday's game will count as a regular-season contest for the Bulldogs, but will be an exhibition game for NCAA Division III member Calvin due to varying NCAA rules in regards to the official starting date between the Division II and III levels.
It will begin a season-opening three-game homestand for the Bulldogs, who will next host St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Monday (Nov. 15) night in regional action followed by a regional afternoon contest versus Lewis (Ill.) next Saturday, Nov. 20, at Wink Arena.
Ninth-year FSU head coach Bill Sall will square off versus his alma mater in this Saturday night's contest against Calvin. Sall, who was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American as a standout player at Calvin from 1985-90, has been involved in 13 previous Calvin-Ferris regular-season meetings while emerging victorious 10 times.
Additionally, current FSU volunteer assistant coach Ed Douma also lists Calvin as his alma mater and later spent part of his 33 years as a collegiate head coach for the Knights, whom he led to the NCAA-III National Championship in 1991-92. Sall played for Douma at Calvin and later served as an assistant coach on his staff at the school.
Last season (11/10/09), the Bulldogs posted an 88-68 road win over Calvin in an exhibition game at Grand Rapids. Overall, FSU and Calvin have squared off 82 times in men's basketball regular-season action with the Knights holding a commanding 65-17 series' advantage, but the Bulldogs registered a 78-64 road win in the last official meeting for either team nearly four years ago (11/22/05).
A year ago, Calvin posted a 19-9 overall record and captured the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship. Kevin Vande Streek begins his 15th year as the Knights' head coach this season and his squad was picked to finish second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Bulldogs dropped a 78-65 overtime decision to the NCAA Division I Indiana Hoosiers on Monday night at IU's Assembly Hall in Bloomington (Ind.) after leading for the entire second half and nearly winning the contest as the final horn sounded in regulation before having the game-winning shot waved off after a replay review.
Tickets for Saturday's contest versus Calvin will be available at the door starting one hour prior to the contest. FSU students are admitted free with ID. For more information on home ticket sales, please contact the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
