Big Rapids, Mich. – A new era of excitement continues to build as incoming Ferris State University head football coach Tony Annese announced today (Feb. 1) his first class of recruits as part of National Signing Day.
Annese and his staff landed one of the Bulldogs' largest incoming classes in recent memory as 31 players signed national letters-of-intent. The announcement of this year's recruiting class was made in an afternoon press conference to the media inside FSU's Wheeler Pavilion at Top Taggart Field.
The press conference announcing this year's signees will be aired later tonight via an online stream by the Bulldog Sports Network at www.FerrisStateBulldogs.com. It will include Coach Annese's comments in addition to questions from the media and video highlights of year's class. A link to the video will be posted when available.
"We're excited to have these guys join the Bulldog football team and feel good about this incoming class," Annese said. "With this being a transitional period, we felt we needed to bring in some more guys to battle the guys already here on campus so this is a big class and one we're very happy to announce."
The 31-member class included 28 players from inside the state of Michigan along with one player from the state of Florida and two from Illinois.
In all, the Bulldogs inked 13 players on the offensive side of the ball with 18 on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage.
The class includes a pair of local players in Morley-Stanwood slot receiver Tyler Hanks along with Central Montcalm offensive lineman Tyler James. Nearly half of FSU's signees came from parts of West Michigan, which was a point of emphasis for Annese and his staff.
Included among the 13 offensive signees were two quarterbacks, three running backs, four receivers/slot players and four offensive lineman. The defensive commitments featured seven linemen, five linebackers and six players in the secondary.
The out-of-state player from Florida came from highly-regarded state champion Manatee in running back Antonio Agurs. A quarterback, Trevor Bermingham, joined the Bulldogs from Illinois where FSU also landed defensive back Patrick Marner.
From West Michigan, the Bulldogs inked players from four different schools in the immediate Grand Rapids area along with players from Muskegon, North Muskegon, Byron Center, Zeeland West, Saugatuck and Grand Haven.
While FSU landed a large group of players from West Michigan, they were also able to attract players from nearly ever corner of the state from locations such as Port Huron on the east, Charlotte and Mason towards the middle, McBain further north along with Ontonagon in the Upper Peninsula among other spots.
FSU also placed a primary focus on adding players from winning program as 24 of the signees made the state playoffs in their prep careers and the group combined registered a 239-49 overall prep record in their senior campaigns. A total of five won state championships. Additionall, eight were selected to compete in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-Star Game.
The Bulldogs are currently conducting winter conditioning workouts and will open spring practice drills in March with the 2012 season set to start in early September.
