Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University alumnus and former Bulldog football student-athlete Ira Childress will be on campus Wednesday, Jan. 25, to speak on the topic, "Launching Your Career in the Sports and Entertainment Industry."

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the College of Business where Childress will offer students and other attendees some tips on how to break into the sports and entertainment industry.

"I'm honored to speak at my alma mater," said Childress, a native of Baldwin who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Speech Communication and a master's degree in Education from Ferris. "I have so many fond memories of my time at Ferris State University … winning a GLIAC football championship, receiving my bachelor's and master's degrees, working for five years as an administrator and, of course, all of the great people that touched my life during that time. Ferris is home for me."

Mariah Kennedy, a junior student at Ferris who is working to help organize the event, is hoping those who attend the presentation will learn more about what the sports industry has to offer.

"Those who attend this presentation will be able to take the information that Ira will provide and apply it to their future for success," Kennedy said.

Since his graduation from Ferris, Childress has worked as an administrator for joint programs with the National Football League and has worked as a sports broadcaster and journalist covering a number of professional events, including a Super Bowl. Childress worked for the National Collegiate Athletic Association before he took on the challenge of his latest endeavor as owner of Childress Sports Consulting, a career development and sports media service for student-athletes, professional athletes and others interested in a career in athletics.

"I loved my time at the NCAA, and leaving was a leap of faith for me, but I truly believe in Childress Sports Consulting," Childress said. "I have a great partner, Andrea Mosher, and we are making a positive impact on the lives of people every day. Our company offers great a prep education program for high school student-athletes who are making the transition to college.

"We also provide high-impact, engaging and unique career development services for college students, student-athletes, professional athletes and professionals who want to launch their career in the athletic industry."

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Mariah Kennedy at kennem11@ferris.edu.
