Big Rapids, Mich. - Fall camp is officially underway for the 2011 Ferris State University football team as the Bulldogs held their first official practice in helmets on Friday (Aug. 12) morning.
The Bulldogs' returning veterans reported to camp Thursday (Aug. 11) after the squad welcomed its incoming class on Wednesday (Aug. 10). The annual "Freshman Picnic" hosted by the FSU Gridiron Club took place on Wednesday night at Top Taggart Field.
FSU will hold a total of 25 workouts along with two scrimmages prior to the team's season opener on Sept. 2.
The Bulldogs hold their first two-a-day practice session on Wednesday (Aug. 17) after a mandatory five-day acclimation period. FSU's first practice in full pads takes place on Tuesday (Aug. 16) afternoon.
In addition to the practice, Friday's opening day of camp agenda also included testing, a shuttle run, team meetings, weight training and position/special teams meetings.
Ferris' three-week training camp period will not only feature practices and scrimmages, but also meetings, lifting, conditioning, testing and various orientation sessions. Practices will be held both on the FSU practice fields along with selected ones on the Mondo Ecofill artificial surface at Top Taggart Field.
FSU's initial preseason scrimmage is set for Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9:30 a.m. (EDT). The final scrimmage will be held prior to FSU's annual media/photo day activities on Friday, Aug. 26. The scrimmage will begin at 9 a.m. (EDT) with the media/photo day taking place at 1 p.m. (EDT).
Ferris State kicks off its 103rd season of varsity competition this fall by hosting Hillsdale in a non-conference matchup on Friday, Sept. 2, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Top Taggart Field. FSU and Hillsdale are not scheduled to play each other as part of the GLIAC schedule this season.
The Bulldogs, who will play an 11-game regular-season schedule, open GLIAC action the following week at Saginaw Valley State in their first road contest on Saturday, Sept. 10, at SVSU's Wickes Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
