Big Rapids, Mich. - East Grand Rapids built a three-touchdown halftime lead and rolled to a 31-16 triumph over Mt. Pleasant in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 State Semifinal game hosted on Saturday (Nov. 20) by Ferris State University at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
A crowd of 2,100 fans watched the unbeaten Pioneers and Oilers battle on FSU's Mondo Ecofill artificial surface in the state semifinals. East Grand Rapids led 21-0 at the break and held a 24-0 advantage in the third period before Mt. Pleasant scored two of the game's final three touchdowns.
With the win, East Grand Rapids will advance to Ford Field to square off against Orchard Lake St. Mary's in the Division 3 state final on Saturday, Nov. 27, in Detroit.
East Grand Rapids is the defending MHSAA Division 3 State Champion and beat Orchard Lake St. Mary's by a 24-21 count in last year's (11/28/09) state title game at Ford Field.
East Grand Rapids improved to 13-0 this campaign with the semifinal win. Meanwhile, Mt. Pleasant concluded the campaign with a 12-1 overall record.
