Bay City, Mich. - The Ferris State University football team was
selected to finish 11th in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Football Coaches Preseason Poll, which
was released Wednesday (Aug. 18) in conjunction with the launch of
the GLIAC Football Media Day website.
The Bulldogs received 48 points in the balloting, which was conducted by the conference's 14 head coaches. The coaches weren't allowed to vote for their own team. The first-place team on each ballot earned 13 points while the second-place team received 12 points, etc. A season ago, Ferris State was chosen to place seventh with 66 total points in the conference's preseason gridiron poll.
"It's a new season, a new start and a new campaign for our
program," said FSU head coach Jeff Pierce, who
will begin his 16th year at Ferris State this fall and is the
program's all-time winningest coach with an 91-74 (.5552)
career coaching mark. "We got knocked down last year and our guys
have a chip on their shoulder now.
"We're looking forward to another season and the opportunity to
make it happen," he added.
Defending conference champion Grand Valley State was selected as
the preseason favorite to capture the conference title as the
Lakers earned 169 points and picked up 13 of the 14 first-place
votes. Hillsdale and Saginaw Valley State, both of whom reached the
NCAA Division II Playoffs in 2009, were tied for second place in
the poll with 148 total points.
The Bulldogs were listed above Tiffin and the two new schools
joining the conference this season in Ohio Dominican and Lake
Erie. FSU will face all three of those schools in the opening
four week stretch of conference competition.
Ferris State will kickoff its 102nd season of varsity action
Friday, Sept. 3, against Hillsdale in a 7 p.m. (EDT) non-conference
contest at HC's Muddy Waters Stadium in Hillsdale, Mich.
The Bulldogs then open GLIAC play the following week with their
first home contest of the 2010 season versus Saginaw Valley State
on Saturday, Sept. 11. Kickoff for the "Honoring American
Heroes" Day tilt is scheduled for 6 p.m. (EDT) with a variety of
activities taking place throughout the day.
Tickets for all home games can be purchased at the game or for more information please contact the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
