Ferris State University will hold "Community Football Day" in conjunction with this Saturday's (Aug. 29) Bulldog football season opener against Tiffin (Ohio) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs will kick off the 2009 season by teaming up with Big Rapids High School for a prep/college doubleheader. The Cardinals' high school squad will open its 2009 season versus Holton at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) followed by FSU's season-opening non-league tilt against Tiffin at 7 p.m. (EDT). The twinbill will take place as part of Ferris "Welcome Week" activities and a rocket football contest will be part of the FSU halftime events, making it a true community event.

"The Cardinal football program is proud to join Ferris for an exciting day of football, which the entire Big Rapids community will enjoy," said Big Rapids High School football coach Mitch Cumings, who guided the Cardinals to a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Playoff berth last fall. "It will most certainly be a day filled with quality football as both teams unviel the hard work of a long off-season and kick off their pursuit of championship seasons.

"This special event is a great opportunity to showcase not just the talent of our local student-athletes, but also the great relationship between the college, high school and Big Rapids community. It is a unique advantage for our kids to be able to share so much with the university and this is just one more extension of that outstanding relationship," he added.

Promotions planned for "Community Football Day" also include a Cornhole Tournament starting at 4 p.m. (EDT) and a giant slip'n'slide event at halfitme of the college contest.  The game will also include in-game promotions such as Ken's Kick Contest, Birkam Football giveaway, Synder's Certificates and Patterson's Bulldog Sweetheart of the Game.

If the weather is nice, a lucky group will also sit in recliners and sofas compliments of Big Rapids Furniture and the "Best Seat in the House" contest.

Finally, a special kids corner called "The Bulldog Challenge" will be set up in the turf practice area on the northeast side of Top Taggart Field and be part of the day's activities.  The kids area will be sponsored by Sgt. Shawn Fries and the National Guard and feature such things as a mechanical rock wall, inflatable obstacle course and throwing contests.

"We're excited about being able to offer this kids area to the Ferris community and add to the excitement of Bulldog Football," Fries said. "The National Guard wants to be visible on campus and this is one way for us to make connections."

Tickets will be available at the gate or for more information, please contact the FSU Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888. FSU tickets can also be bought online at www.starticketsplus.com.
