Ferris Women's CC Places 10th In Louisville

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's cross country team ran to a 10th-place finish in the prestigious Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic held Saturday (Oct. 2) in Louisville, Ky.

The event was hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission with nearly 100 teams from all levels of collegiate competition involved in the field.  Races were contested in six different divisions with three each for men and women at Tom Sawyer State Park.

Tom Sawyer State Park will also serve later this year as the site of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships (Nov. 20) and the 2010 NCAA-II National Championships (Dec. 4).

Bulldog women's squad took part in the top "Gold" division race and competed against the likes of NCAA Division I powers such as Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.) and Missouri along with nationally-ranked Division II schools including rival Grand Valley State.

FSU totaled 354 points in placing 10th of 35 teams in the field, which consisted of 302 total runners.  Grand Valley State took first overall (106 points) followed by Vanderbilt (107), Georgia (198), Shippensburg (208) and Western Kentucky (225) in the top five.

Senior Tina Muir (St. Albans, U.K.) paced the Bulldogs by finishing 17th overall on the 5K course in a time of 17:32.13 on Saturday. The race was won by Neely Spence of Shippensburg (Pa.) in a time of 16:32.90.

Freshman Samantha Johnson (Troy) came in 63rd overall (18:10.90) for FSU followed by sophomore Alyssa Osika (Waterford/Mott) in 84th place (18:26.13).

Sophomore Anna Rudd (Leslie) took 99th place (18:32.04) with freshman Brittany Anderson (Tustin/Pine River) coming in 125th (18:44.05) and sophmore Shelby Janutol (Troy) finishing 143rd (18:50.23).  Sophomore Felicia Peacock (Hesperia) wound up 259th (19:59.67) and sophomore Jordan McGuire (Shepherd) placed 267th (20:07.27).

Louisville's Tom Sawyer State Park has been the site of five NAIA National Cross Country Championships, the 2007 BIG EAST Conference Championships along with the 2006, 2007 and 2009 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.

The Bulldog women's cross country team presently is ranked 10th nationally in this week's (Sept. 29) United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Poll along with second in the Midwest Regional Rankings behind GVSU.
