BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad opened its final weekend of regular-season play by sweeping Roosevelt 25-11, 25-14, 25-16 inside Bulldog Arena on Friday (Nov. 14) evening.
The Bulldogs displayed a strong offensive performance, recording a .374 hitting percentage with 43 kills. The home team also excelled on the defensive side, tallying 45 digs and limiting the Lakers to a .000 hitting figure.
The match began with FSU establishing a dominant presence on its home court, capturing the first seven points, including a service ace by Emma Bleecher and multiple kills by Logyn Geren and Gabby Piazza. Roosevelt struggled to find its footing, with the Bulldogs capitalizing on several attack errors. Despite a brief rally from the Lakers, Ferris State continued to extend the lead, fueled by Emily May's two kills and a service ace by Hope Davies. Alana Deshetsky contributed with a service ace, while Geren and Hayley Robinson secured the final points, leading Ferris State to a decisive 25-11 victory in the opening set.
The Bulldogs recorded a 25-14 victory in the second set against Roosevelt with a strong performance led by May and Piazza. May contributed three pivotal kills, all assisted by Hayley Wegener, to help establish an early lead. Roosevelt struggled with errors, committing several service and attack mistakes that widened the Bulldogs' advantage. Piazza and Lyndsey Urick delivered key points, with Piazza scoring two late kills from Corrie Wisser's sets. The Lakers attempted a comeback but were unable to overcome FSU's consistent scoring, culminating in Urick's final kill for the set point.
Ferris State started the third set with a strong performance, quickly gaining a 3-0 advantage, highlighted by an ace from Bleecher and a kill by Wegener. Roosevelt managed to halt the momentum momentarily, but FSU responded with multiple kills from Piazza and May, extending the lead to 7-2. RU attempted to close the gap with contributions from Abigail Wutka and Ella Portu; however, errors hindered their progress. Ferris State capitalized on these errors, and Rhiannon Robertson's three consecutive kills brought them to match point. Robinson secured the set and match victory with a kill, concluding the set at 25-16.
May posted a strong performance with 10 kills on 12 attempts, hitting at an impressive .833 percentage. Piazza contributed significantly with 10 kills and added six digs to her stats. Wegener facilitated the offense by delivering 25 assists while also recording four kills with a .667 hitting percentage. Davies anchored the defense, collecting 14 digs to lead the team in that category.
Zoe Hutchinson led the Lakers with a solid performance, contributing eight assists in three games and achieving a .500 hitting percentage with two kills on four attempts. Vivienne Merchant added six kills from 14 attempts, maintaining a .214 hitting percentage.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 21-6 overall and 12-3 in conference play. Roosevelt dropped to 2-25 overall and 1-14 in league action. Ferris State also secured a quarterfinal-round home contest in the GLIAC Tournament with the triumph.
Ferris State will host Parkside in the regular-season finale for Senior Day on Saturday (Nov. 15) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) inside Bulldog Arena. FSU can clinch a share of the GLIAC Championship and the top seed for the upcoming conference tournament with a win.
