Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad notched a pair of wins on Friday (Oct. 17) at the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament, taking two victories in the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond, Ind.
The Bulldogs began the day with a 3-1 win over Maryville (Mo.) and closed the afternoon with a 3-1 triumph over Walsh in regional play to move to 15-4 overall this year. FSU has now won its last eight matches in a row.
In the opener, the Bulldogs took set one versus Maryville 25-18 before the Saints responded with a 25-22 win in the second frame. However, Ferris State closed the match by winning sets three and four by scores of 25-11 and 25-21, respectively.
Senior Emma Bleecher led the Bulldogs with 19 kills in the opening match win while adding 17 digs. Emily May added 18 kills and Gabby Piazza finished with 13 kills in addition to 19 digs. Setter Hayley Wegener contributed 47 assists and 17digs while Hope Davies netted a team-high 20 digs for the Bulldogs.
FSU hit .260 overall with 64 kills and 20 attack errors on 169 tries. Additionally, the Bulldogs added 87 digs, 12 block assists, two solo blocks and six service aces. The Saints posted only a .140 attack percentage and had only 67 digs in the setback.
In the second match of the day, the Bulldogs captured a 25-18 win over Walsh in the opening set. The Cavaliers answered by taking set two 25-22 before Ferris State came up with a 25-12 win in the third frame and a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set to close out the match.
May had 16 kills overall for FSU and Piazza added 11 kills. Wegener contributed 39 assists and 17 digs with Davies also adding 17 digs in the victory.
Ferris State finished match two with 55 kills and 18 attack errors on 139 attempts for a .266 figure. The Bulldogs had 71 digs, 10 block assists, eight aces and a solo block.
Walsh was held to a .091 attack percentage and WU finished with 59 digs, 12 block assists, seven aces and a solo block.
Ferris State will close out the Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 19) versus Lewis (Ill.) starting at 3 p.m. (ET).
