#12 Ferris State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Showdown To #19 GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 12th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad fought back from an early deficit and took 19th-ranked rival Grand Valley State to the wire before falling 3-2 on Friday (Sept. 26) evening inside Bulldog Arena.

The Lakers captured a 25-23 win in the opening set and a 25-20 triumph in set two before FSU climbed back to tie the match with wins of 25-22 in the third frame and 25-19 in the fourth set.

In the deciding set five, the Lakers jumped in front early but Ferris State responded. The Bulldogs held a late lead in the back-and-fourth affair before GVSU eventually pulled out an extremely close 17-15 win.

With the setback, the Bulldogs dropped to 7-4 overall this year and 2-1 in league play. The Lakers improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Gabby Piazza finished with 18 kills in leading FSU while Emily May added 13 kills and Logyn Geren chipped in 10 kills. Setter Hayley Wegener notched 49 assists.

Defensively, the Bulldogs got 17 digs each from Wegener and Hope Davies along with 13 by senior Emma Bleecher and 12 from Piazza. Lilly Peterson added 10 digs.

FSU finished with 67 kills and 30 attack errors on 192 attempts, hitting .193 overall. Ferris State also had 91 digs to go with 10 block assists and four solo blocks. The Bulldogs had five service aces, but also 14 service errors in the contest.

Peterson led FSU at the net with four block assists and three solo blocks.

Grand Valley State was led by Meghan O'Sullivan with 16 kills. McKenzie Johnson added 23 digs overall. The Lakers hit .218 overall to go with 79 digs, eight block assists, seven solo blocks and four aces.

Ferris State will close out the weekend homestead against Wayne State on Saturday (Sept. 27) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) inside Bulldog Arena.
