Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad claimed a victory in its first home match of the 2025 campaign as the Bulldogs opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a 3-1 triumph over visiting Michigan Tech on Friday (Sept. 19) evening at Bulldog Arena.
In front of a big crowd for the home opener, FSU took the opening two sets by scores of 25-23 and 26-24 before MTU responded with a 25-21 win in the third set. However, the Bulldogs closed out the victory by taking set four 26-24, improving to 6-3 overall this year.
The Bulldogs had a balanced attack offensively as sophomore Gabby Piazza led the way with 13 kills. FSU's Emily May and Logyn Geren both added 12 kills, Lillian Peterson chipped in 11 kills and Emma Bleecher finished with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Hayley Wegener keyed the offense with 51 assists in the triumph.
Overall, Ferris State posted a .248 attack percentage with 61 kills and 20 attack errors on 165 attempts. The Bulldgos also notched six service aces.
Defensively, FSU came up with 81 digs, including 21 by libero Jasmine Wellet. Wegener and Bleecher both added 13 digs apiece while Piazza chipped in with 10 digs.
Michigan Tech posted a .210 hitting figure and was led by Jacqueline Yancy with 20 kills. Rachel Zurek added 10 kills and Madelynn Kreider netted 35 assists. Brynn Erickson totaled 30 digs as MTU fell to 3-5 overall this year.
Ferris State will continue its homestand by hosting Northern Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 20) starting at 12 p.m. (ET) inside Bulldog Arena.
