Ferris State Opens Final Weekend Of Regular-Season With Sweep Over Roosevelt

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad opened up its final weekend of regular-season play with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road sweep on Saturday (April 26), beating Roosevelt University by identical 5-2 scores near Chicago.

With the two victories, the Bulldogs now own a 26-16 overall record and are 15-11 in conference play entering the final doubleheader of the league season.

Both teams compiled seven hits in the opener, but Ferris State scored four runs in the top of the fourth to pull in front and limited RU to a single run the rest of the way while adding an insurance run of its own in the sixth.

FSU second baseman Jadyn Joseph tallied a pair of hits in game one while first baseman Alexis Kozlowski compiled a hit, an RBI, a run scored and drew two walks. Shortstop Bailey McCalister doubled and knocked in a run while both catcher Emily Killion and outfielder Emma Gillard both also finished with an RBI. The Bulldogs also finished with seven stolen bases, including two each from Joseph and McCalister.

In the pitching circle, Catherine O'Donohue went the distance for the Bulldogs and allowed only two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work for the victory.

The Bulldogs came back in game two to total 10 hits and limit the Lakers to only three. FSU scored in the second, but Roosevelt took the lead with two runs in the third. However, from there the Bulldogs kept the Lakers off the board and Ferris State tied the game up in the fifth and then scored three times in the seventh for the victory.

Kozlowski and McCalister both had two hits for the Bulldogs. FSU also got RBI's from Kozlowski, Killion, outfielder Maddie Gkekas and third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek in the triumph.

The Bulldogs' Cecelia Bell earned the win in the circle, giving up only two runs on three hits with two K's and a walk in seven innings of work in the complete game effort.

Ferris State will close out regular-season action looking for a sweep on Sunday (April 27) at Parkside with first pitch for the opener set for 1 p.m. (CT). The Bulldogs need two wins to match rival Grand Valley State for second place in the league standings.
