Senior Day Interview & Highlights
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad closed out the home portion of the 2025 season with a pair of close setbacks to visiting Wayne State on Tuesday (April 22) at the FSU Softball Field.
The Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 decision in the opener before suffering a 3-2 setback in the nightcap in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) twin bill.
As part of the final home contests, the Bulldogs celebrated Senior Day and honored the trio of third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek along with outfielders Maddie Gkekas and Riley Kish following the doubleheader.
In the opener, Wayne State compiled nine hits and limited FSU to only five in garnering the victory. The Warriors scored the opening run in the first before Ferris State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. The score stood until WSU managed to put four runs up in the seventh to come away with the triumph.
The Bulldogs' five total hits included a triple from first baseman Alexis Kozlowski. She drove in a run as did catcher Emily Killion, who also had a hit. FSU also got hits from designated player Abby Meyer along with Gkekas and shortstop Bailey McCalister.
Catherine O'Donohue hurled all seven innings for the Bulldogs and allowed only two earned runs on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk.
In game two, the Warriors finished with 10 hits and again held the Bulldogs to only five. Both teams scored a run apiece in the third and the Warriors took a 3-1 margin with two runs in the fifth. The Bulldogs managed a single run in the seventh before Wayne State closed out the win.
Outfielder Emma Gillard had a pair of hits for FSU while Kozlowski, Gkekas and catcher Paige Antcliff all had one apiece. The Bulldogs got a double from Antcliff and a triple by Gillard while both Kozlowski and Gkekas drove in runs.
FSU's Cecelia Bell went the distance in the circle and allowed three runs on 10 hits with one walk in seven innings of work.
Ferris State, which is now 24-16 overall this year, will close out the regular season on the road this weekend. FSU visits Parkside on Friday (April 25) for a league doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. (ET) before taking on Roosevelt on Saturday (April 26) beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
