Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team claimed a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road split against rival Grand Valley State on Saturday (April 12) in Allendale.
The Bulldogs took a 7-4 win in eight innings in the opener before falling short 3-2 in the nightcap. With the split, FSU finished the regular-season by winning three of four contests versus GVSU following their first sweep of the Lakers in a doubleheader since 2010 earlier this month.
On Saturday, in the opener Ferris State tallied 10 hits and scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 deadlock and ultimately come away with the win. FSU also scored twice in the third for the game's initial runs and then took a 4-3 in the seventh before the Lakers tied the game back up to force extra innings.
The Bulldogs had multi-hit games from second baseman Jadyn Joseph, first baseman Alexis Kozlowski, third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek and right fielder Breanna Blair as all four had two hits in the opener. Outfielder Emma Gillard drove in three runs and added a double as did Blair.
A trio of pitchers in Catherine O'Donohue, Ella Covill-Marter and Cecilia Bell combined to give up only four earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk for FSU. Bell garnered the save by tossing one and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up only two hits with a strikeout.
In game two, the Bulldogs scored the first run in the third and tied the game back up with a run in the fourth after GVSU had taken a 2-1 lead. The Lakers took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth with a single run and keep FSU off the board to hold on for the win. FSU had seven hits and the Lakers managed six.
Shortstop Bailey McCalister had two hits for the Bulldogs in game two and posted a double. Meanwhile, Emily Killion and Verbeek each knocked in a run.
Bell threw all six innings in the night cap, allowing a single earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks for FSU.
The Bulldogs are now 20-12 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Ferris State will visit Purdue Northwest on Sunday (April 13) for a league doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) in Hammond, Ind.
