Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University softball squad recorded two wins against rival Grand Valley State University Tuesday (April 1) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs (15-9, 4-4 GLIAC) topped the Lakers 5-4 in game one and followed that up with a 3-1 win in game two, the first time since May 1, 2010 that FSU recorded two wins in the same day against GVSU.

Catherine O'Donohue went the distance in game one, earning her sixth win while allowing four runs, issuing three walks and striking out five batters. Emily Killion led the way with two hits and two RBIs for FSU with Brooklyn Verbeek, Cecelia Bell and Alexis Kozlowski each knocking in a run.

Ferris State scored four runs in the fifth inning, starting when Killion plated two runs with a base hit to right field. Bell then singled in a run and Verbeek capped off the inning with a base hit that scored Bell.

In the sixth inning, Kozlowski reached base and Jaydn Joseph scored, giving FSU a 5-2 lead. The Lakers scored twice in the top of the seventh, but O'Donohue held on for the victory in game one.

FSU tallied eight hits and no errors, besting GVSU's five hits and three miscues.

In game two, the Lakers got out to a fast start, scoring a run in the first inning. Bell then slammed the door, allowing no runs the rest of the way. GVSU's lone run was charged to FSU starter Ella Covill-Marter. Bell came in midway through the Lakers' second at bat, allowing three hits and striking out five batters the remainder of the game.

Maddie Gkekas had a fourth-inning single that plated FSU's first run of game two as Emma Gillard scored to tie the game 1-1. In the fifth, Joseph reached base on a fielder's choice that Abby Meyer scored on. Bailey McCalister then recorded a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, scoring Addison Wangler and giving FSU a 3-1 edge going into the top of the seventh.

Bell struck out two batters in the seventh and helped FSU to its first GLIAC sweep of the year, earning her fourth win of the season. The Bulldogs had five hits and one error in game two, while the Lakers had three hits and three errors.

Due to a schedule adjustment, Ferris State will now be back in action Thursday (April 3) for a home doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State in league play. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. (ET) and game two is set for 5 p.m. (ET).
