Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad dropped a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests on Wednesday (March 26) at Davenport in Caledonia.
The host Panthers came away with a 6-4 win in the opener and pulled out a 7-5 decision in game two to come away with the league home sweep.
In the opener, the Bulldogs took the lead early with two runs in the first and then stretched the lead to 3-0 with a run in the fourth. FSU added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 4-0, but the Panthers took advantage of their final at-bat with six runs in the bottom of the inning for the win. DU had seven hits to four for Ferris State.
The Bulldogs got hits from second baseman Jadyn Joseph along with first baseman Alexis Kozlowski, catcher Emily Killion and shortstop Bailey McCalister. Kozlowski homered and drove in two runs while Killion had a double and an RBI in the decision.
FSU's Catherine O'Dononue tossed six and one-third innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Ella Covill-Marter threw one-third of an inning and allowed four runs on two hits with two walks.
In game two, the Bulldogs again took the lead with two runs in the top of the first. DU put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, but FSU regained the advantage with two more runs in the second. Davenport eventually recaptured the lead by scoring four times in the sixth and then held FSU to a single run in the seventh for the win. The Panthers finished with an 11-4 edge in total hits.
Joseph had a hit in game two and was joined by centerfielder Emma Gillard along with left fielder Maddie Gkekas and third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek. Both Gillard and Joseph knocked in a run while McCalister and catcher Addison Wangler had sacrifice hits.
Cecelia Bell threw five innings for FSU and gave up seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Covill-Marter tossed a single inning and did not give up a run on two hits with one K.
The Bulldogs will play their home opener on Friday (March 28) versus Purdue Northwest with the first pitch for the opener set for 2 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Softball Field, weather permitting.
