Ferris State Softball Opens GLIAC Play With Sunday Split In Detroit

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a split on Sunday (March 23) against the Wayne State Warriors in Detroit.

The Bulldogs took the opener in decisive fashion by a 9-1 score before falling just short in a comeback via a 5-4 decision in game two. With the split, FSU now holds a 12-6 overall record this campaign.

Ferris State put nine runs on the board and tallied 10 hits in the opener while limiting WSU to a single run on three hits overall. The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before putting six runs on the board in the seventh for the victory.

FSU's 10 hits came from 10 different individuals. Both Emily Gillard and Emily Killion doubled while Riley Kish had a triple in the game. Ferris State finished with nine RBI's, including two apiece from both first baseman Alexis Kozlowski and shortstop Bailey McCalister.

The Bulldogs' Catherine O'Donohue went the distance in the opener and garnered her fourth victory of the campaign by allowing only a single earned run on three hits. She had three strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, Wayne State scored in the opening inning and put four runs on the board in the second in building a 5-0 lead. However, the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the third and came up just short with a single run in their final at-bat in the seventh. Overall, Wayne State managed eight hits to five for the Bulldogs.

Both second baseman Jadyn Joseph and Kozlowski had two hits apiece for FSU in game two. Kozlowski also drove in three runs and walked twice. She produced a home run and a double while Joseph tripled in the game and knocked in a run.

In the pitching circle, Ella Covill-Marter threw one inning and allowed four earned runs on five hits with two walks. Cecelia Bell came on to throw five innings, giving up a single earned run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

The Bulldogs will visit Davenport for a league doubleheader in Caledonia on Wednesday (March 26) starting at 3 p.m. (ET). FSU then hosts Purdue Northwest in the home opener on Saturday (March 29) with the opening pitch set for 2 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Softball Field.
