Bulldog Softball Finishes Florida Trip Unbeaten With Two Friday Victories

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team capped off an unbeaten trip to Florida as the Bulldogs closed their annual spring break trip to the Sunshine State with a sweep on Friday (March 14) at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games near Melbourne.

Ferris State topped Ursuline in regional play 3-0 in Friday's opener and then beat Franklin Pierce by a 5-2 score in the finale to finish the trip with a perfect 6-0 mark.

With the two wins, the Bulldogs are now 11-5 overall this year and have won nine of their past 11 outings overall.

In the opener, the Bulldogs generated a single run in the third inning and added two more in the fifth while keeping Ursuline off the board in the shutout victory. FSU totaled eight hits and limited the Arrows to only five in the contest.

Both shortstop Jayden Marlatt and Catherine O'Donohue tallied two hits apiece for the Bulldogs. O'Donohue and Maddie Gkekas both doubled and Marlatt had a triple along with an RBI. First baseman Alexis Kozlowski also knocked in a run.

O'Donohue picked up the victory by hurling three innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits with three walks. Cecelia Bell tossed four innings and gave up only two hits with two walks.

In game two, the Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead over Franklin Pierce and never trailed in the win. FSU added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames while the opposition produced only one run in the second and one more in the third. FSU finished with seven hits compared to five for Franklin Pierce.

O'Donohue paced FSU with two additional hits in the nightcap. Meanwhile, Kozlowski drove in a run as did Gkekas and Bailey McCalister.

The Bulldogs' Ella Covill-Marter recorded her fifth win of the campaign by giving up only two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Bell threw two innings and allowed a single hit and struck out one.

Ferris State will return home and open GLIAC play on the road at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, March 22, with first pitch in University Center set for 1 p.m. (ET).
