Ferris State Softball Stays Unbeaten In Florida With Two Decisive Wins On Thursday
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team stayed unbeaten in Florida as the Bulldogs recorded a pair of 9-1 wins on Thursday (March 13) at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games near Melbourne.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 in the Sunshine State by topping New Haven in the opener and D'Youville in the nightcap by identical scores. The second game lasted only five innings as the Bulldogs earned the sweep for the second-straight day.
With the two wins, FSU is now 9-5 overall this year and has won eight of its last 10 outings to date this campaign.
Ferris State fell behind early in the opener by a run, but responded with a run of its own in the top of the third against New Haven. FSU then took the lead with two runs in the fifth and pulled away with back-to-back three run innings in the sixth and the seventh to garner the triumph. Overall, FSU finished with 10 hits in the game.
Outfielder Emma Gillard tallied three hits for FSU while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Designated player Abby Meyer also produced a pair of hits and outfielder Maddie Gkekas knocked in two runs. FSU's Alexis Kozlowski tripled and both Gillard along with Jasyl Withers and Hanna Smith came up with doubles in the victory.
In the circle, Cecilia Bell claiemd the win by throwing four innnings and allowing only a single run on six hits. Catherine O'Donohue threw three innings of work and finished with only two hits allowed and no runs to go with two strikeouts and a walk.
In game two, Ferris State jumped in front of D'Youville early, scoring four times in the bottom of the first along with three more times in the second and twice in the fourth. D'Youville managed a single run in its first at-bat and was held scoreless the rest of the way. FSU finished with six hits and gave up only two.
Gillard drove in three runs on a hit and two walks while also scoring three times for the Bulldogs. Catcher Emily Killion finished with two hits and two RBI's while Kozlowski also tallied a pair of hits. O'Donohue drove in two runs and she added a double as did Gillard.
The Bulldogs' Ella Coville-Marter garnered the win, tossing all five innings with a single earned run allowed on only two hits. She walked four and struck out two in the Bulldog victory.
Ferris State closes out the trip to Florida with two additional games on Friday (March 14). FSU faces Ursuline in regional play at 10 a.m. (ET) before concluding the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games versus Franklin Pierce beginning at 12:15 p.m. (ET).
