Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team posted a regional split on Thursday (Feb. 20) against the Tiffin Dragons in a non-league doubleheader at the Rosemont Dome in Chicago.
The Bulldogs took the opener by a 5-1 score before falling 7-6 in nine innings in game two. The two-game set was scheduled following the cancellation of the Blue Bridge Battle in Evansville (Ind.).
Ferris State, which is now 4-4 overall this year, claimed its fourth win in five games in the opener as FSU built an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning. FSU finished with eight hits and limited TU to only five in the game.
Along with the three runs in the first, Ferris State added two runs in the fifth and limited Tiffin to a a single run in the bottom of the first frame.
Both second baseman Jadyn Joseph and centerfielder Emma Gillard had two hits apiece for FSU in game one with Gillard also driving in a pair of runs while doubling in the game. Alexis Kozlowski and Paige Antcliff also added RBI's in the victory.
In the circle, Cecelia Bell earned the win by throwing all seven innings and giving up only a single run on five hits. She had two strikeouts and a walk in the triumph.
The second game went back and forth between the Bulldogs and the Dragons as Tiffin struck first with three runs in the second before FSU responded with three runs in the fourth. Both teams had a single run in the seventh and the game went to extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, TU put three runs on the board in the top of the ninth and held off FSU as the Bulldogs managed two runs in the bottom of the frame, but could not get the tying run. Overall, Tiffin had 11 hits and FSU finished with 10 in the game.
Shortstop Jayden Marlatt had four hits in the nightcap while Kozlowski had three hits. Both also scored twice and notched triples in the setback. Gillard and Bell both drove in two runs while Kozlowski and Maddie Gkekas each had an RBI.
In the circle, sophomore Rylie Haist tossed two innings and gave up no earned runs on four hits. Ella Covill-Marter threw seven innings of action and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
The Bulldogs are next slated to hit the road for a pair of non-league regional doubleheaders next week, visiting Ohio Dominican on Friday (Feb. 28) and Findlay on Saturday (March 1) in Ohio.
