Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's softball squad closed out its season-opening trip to Hawaii with a sweep on Friday (Feb. 7) as the Bulldogs topped Hawaii-Hilo by a 6-2 score in the opener before beating regional foe Lewis (Ill.) by a 9-1 count in six innings of action in Honolulu.
With the sweep on the final day, Ferris State finished its first trip of the year with a 3-3 mark in Hawaii, winning three of its final four games.
In the opener versus Hilo, Ferris State tallied nine hits overall. Shortstop Jayden Marlatt led the Bulldogs with three hits while catcher Emily Killion finished with two in the win. Both first baseman Alexis Kozlowski and second baseman Jadyn Joseph drove in two runs each. The Bulldogs also got a double from Emma Gillard and a triple by Kozlowski.
FSU scored three runs in the second inning and three in the sixth while holding Hawaii-Hilo to only two runs in the fourth.
In the circle, Ella Covill-Martar got the win, throwing all seven innings of action with two runs allowed on eight hits. She had three strikeouts and a single walk in her second win of the year.
Ferris State then came back in the second game to beat Lewis after falling to the Flyers earlier in the week. LU scored a single run in the top of the third to grab the initial lead, but Ferris State responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and finally put the game away by scoring four times in the sixth.
Overall, FSU totaled 13 hits in the game two win. Joseph, Kozlowski and outfielder Bailey McCalister all recorded two hits. Both McCalister and Jasyl Withers drove in two runs while four others had a single RBI. Kozlowski tripled and the Bulldogs notched four doubles off the bats of Joseph, Withers, Marlatt and Paige Antcliff.
The Bulldogs' Cecilia Bell went the distance in game two, tossing all six innings and giving up no earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
