Bulldog Softball Earns Day Two Split While Notching First Victory Of Year In Hawaii

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team earned its first win on Tuesday (Feb. 4) and earned a day two split in Hawaii.

The Bulldogs topped the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers by a 7-4 score in the opening game of the day in Honolulu before falling to Humboldt State (Calif.) by a 6-1 score in the nightcap.

In the opener, Ferris State scored five runs in the opening inning against UNK and added two more insurance runs in the fifth to close out the game. The Bulldogs had seven hits to six for the Lopers.

The trio of first baseman Alexis Kozlowski along with outfielders Emma Gillard and Maddie Gkekas each posted two hits. Kozlowski and Gillard both knocked in two runs.

Offensively, Gillard homered for FSU and Kozlowski, Gkekas and Cecelia Bell all produced doubles in the win.

Newcomer Ella Covill-Marter earned the win by throwing three and two-thirds innings, allowing only four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Bell got the save with two hits allowed and no runs in three and one-third innings of work. She struck out two and walked one.

In the second game, Humboldt State scored once in the first and added three runs in the third and two in the sixth while holding the Bulldogs to a single run in their final at-bat in the seventh. HSU also had 10 hits compared to one for the Bulldogs.

The lone hit for FSU came from outfielder Abby Meyer while catcher Paige Antcliff scored a run and outfielder Bailey McCalister had an RBI.

In the circle, Rylie Haist tossed two and two-thirds innings with three runs allowed on six hits to go with two strikeouts and a walk. Bell tossed three innings, giving up a single run on four hits with two K's while Covill-Marter came on to pitch one and one-third innings of scoreless and hitless action.

The Bulldogs will close out the trip to Hawaii on Friday (Feb. 7) as they take on Hawaii-Hilo at 4 p.m. (ET) before facing Lewis (Ill.) for the second time in regional play at 8 p.m. (ET) in the finale.
