Fast Start Lifts Lewis Over Ferris State To Close Softball Opening-Day Play

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad came out on the short end of a 8-1 decision to regional foe Lewis (Ill.) as FSU wrapped up first day action late Monday (Feb. 3) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In the Bulldogs' second matchup of the opening-day action, which came on the heels of a close 8-7 setback in the season opener against Hillsdale, FSU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could not recover against the Flyers.

Lewis held a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth inning when LU tacked on four more runs before adding an insurance run in the fifth. Overall, the Flyers produced 11 hits to seven for FSU.

The Bulldogs' seven hits included two from shortstop Jayden Marlatt. She had a double as did designated player Cecelia Bell while second baseman Jadyn Joseph tripled and produced FSU's only run.

Sophomore Rylie Haist earned the start and threw three and two-thirds innings of action with seven runs allowed on 10 hits. She had a single walk. Ella Covill-Marter pitched two and one-thirds innings, giving up no earned runs on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 4) against Nebraska-Kearney at 6 p.m. (ET) before facing Humboldt State starting at 8 p.m. (ET) in Hawaii.
