Ferris State Notches First Win While Splitting Opening Two Contests At The Spring Games

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team earned a split and recorded its first victory of the season on Sunday (March 4) as the Bulldogs opened action at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Bulldogs fell to regional foe Lewis (Ill.) 3-2 in eight innings in the opening game of the day before responding with a 9-1 triumph over Saint Rose. The schedule was altered after travel issues impacted FSU's slated game versus LIU-Post (N.Y.), which was cancelled.

In the opening game of the event versus Lewis, Ferris State gave up two runs to the Flyers in the first inning, but knotted the game back up with a single run in both the third and fourth frames. However, in the seventh, Lewis produced the winning run and held FSU in its final at-bat to preserve the win.

Overall, LU had eight hits to seven for the Bulldogs with both senior catcher Emily Reed and senior pitcher Sam Bates notching two hits each for FSU. Sarah Meredith, Sawyer Wightman and Emily Smith all had a single hit for the Bulldogs. Reed and Wightman drove in runs while Meredith posted a double in the attack.

Bates pitched the opener and allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in seven innings of work.

In game two, the Bulldogs produced a run in the second and then exploded offensively for six more in the fifth before adding two insurance runs in the seventh to cruise to the victory over Saint Rose. Overall, FSU had nine hits in the game to seven for the Golden Knights.

Smith tallied three hits and drove in three runs for Ferris State while second baseman Kodi Ramierez also had two hits. Reed, Bates, left fielder Katie Scheuer and pinch hitter Alyx Ayers all had RBI's for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State's Abby Highway got the win in the nightcap after allowing only a single run on seven hits with six K's and two walks in seven innings of action.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Monday (March 5) at The Spring Games with a pair of contests versus Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) and Seton Hill (Pa.) starting at 4:30 p.m. (ET) and 7 p.m. (ET), respectively.
