Bio
Former Ferris State Hockey standout Justin DeMartino joins the Bulldog coaching staff as an assistant to head coach Brett Riley prior to the upcoming 2025-26 campaign.
DeMartino played for FSU from 2010-14 and was a member of the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four team. He also helped FSU to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) regular season championship in 2011-12.
During his playing time with the Bulldogs, DeMartino appeared in 97 games and tallied 37 points on 12 goals and 25 assists. As a junior, he played in 34 games and had 16 points before setting a career-high with 17 points (34 games) as a senior in 2013-14.
DeMartino was part of a Ferris State team that finished top-20 nationally in both power play and penalty kill percentage in 2012-13. The following season, he helped the Bulldogs to a penalty kill percentage of 86.7, fifth best in the nation. FSU also finished that season 10th in goals per game (3.2) and fifth in goals against (2.2).
Most recently, DeMartino served as the head coach for Fox Motors’ U18 squad for three seasons while also acting as head scout for the Wisconsin Windigo of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).
In 2021-22, DeMartino was part of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ staff in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a video coach. He spent 2020-21 in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Youngstown Phantoms as an assistant coach.
Prior to his stint in the USHL, DeMartino coached for Topeka (NAHL) from 2017-2020. He served in numerous roles including assistant coach, associate coach, director of scouting and interim head coach.
DeMartino landed his first coaching job in 2016-17 as a volunteer assistant with Ferris State. His first coaching stint with the Bulldogs was sandwiched between two seasons playing for the Arizona Outlaws in the Mountain West Hockey League (MWHL).
DeMartino has a bachelor’s degree in communications with a focus on sports communications from Ferris State. He began his assistant coaching duties for the Bulldogs in May 2025.
