Ferris State Hockey Suffers Road Setback Against St. Lawrence
Canton, New York – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a road setback against the St. Lawrence Skating Saints on Saturday (Oct. 19) in Appleton Arena.
The Bulldogs (1-3-2) fell 8-0 to St. Lawrence Saturday, splitting the series against the Saints after a 1-0 shutout victory Friday (Oct. 18). St. Lawrence scored six goals on the power play and got a five-point game with a hat trick from Greg Lapointe. Tomáš Mazura and Mason Waite each had four points in the victory.
For Ferris State, freshman goaltender Martin Lundberg got his first collegiate start for the Bulldogs in Saturday's loss.
SLU got its first goal of the game with a power play goal at 15:09 in the first period. Mason Waite finished a one-timer to start the scoring, with Mazura and Philippe Chapleau getting assists.
In the second period, Lapointe scored his first goal of the night at 7:10 with a quick shot off a faceoff win from Mazura. Then, Reilly Connors gave the Saints a 3-0 advantage at 11:07 with Waite and Lapointe assisting.
After the second period, Lundberg had saved 19-22 shots faced, and the Bulldogs trailed 3-0. They went into the third period attempting to mount a comeback.
Cole Burtch was whistled for roughing at 12:24, and the Saints converted their second power play goal of the night. Ty Naaykens scored and Mazura and Lapointe each recorded an assist. Right before Naaykens scored, Trevor Taulien was whistled for a penalty, and upon review, was charged with a major penalty and game misconduct. St. Lawrence went on to score four more power play goals on the penalty.
Lapointe tallied his second goal of the game at 13:02 with Waite and Mazura assisting, giving the Saints a 5-0 lead. At 13:48, Spencer Ball gave SLU a 6-0 lead with Felikss Gavars and Isaac Tremblay assisting.
Lapointe finished the hat trick at 16:45 with the Saints' fifth power play goal of the evening from Waite and Nicholas Beneteau. SLU scored its final goal of the game at 17:37, courtesy of Jacob Bernadet. Sam Hall and Isack Bandu had the helpers.
For the game, SLU converted 6-8 power plays, had 37 shots on goal and won 40 faceoffs. The Bulldogs had 30 shots on goal, went 0-3 on their power play chances, won 28 faceoffs and blocked 12 shots.
Taulien blocked three shots and both Nico DeVita and Kade Turner blocked two. Matt Corbet and Cole Burtch each had four shots on goal. For the Saints, goaltender Mason Kucenski recorded 30 saves in his first career shutout.
Ferris State will return home for its opening series in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play next weekend when Bemidji State comes to town. The Beavers visit Big Rapids for a 7:07 p.m. (ET) puck drop Friday (Oct. 25) and 6:07 p.m. (ET) puck drop Saturday (Oct. 26). Both games will be aired on Sunny 97.3 FM and streamed on Midco Sports Plus.
