2011-12 Ferris State Hockey: A Season Frozen In Time
FERRIS STATE HOCKEY - 2011-12 TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
*Finished as the NCAA Division I National Runner-Up (Highest finish
in school history)
*Advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in school
history
*Won the Midwest Regional Championship for the first time in school
history
*Claimed the school's second-ever Central Collegiate Hockey
Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Championship
*Posted the second-most wins in school history with a 26-12-5
overall record
*Advanced to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school
history and first since 2002-03
*Ferris State was ranked first in the nation for the first time in
school history during two weeks in February
*The Bulldogs sold out five of their final six regular-season home
contests inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena
*Had a nation-leading 15-game unbeaten streak in the New Year until
the regular-season finale on Feb. 25
*Head coach Bob Daniels was honored as both the CCHA and American
Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Coach of the
Year
*Associate Head Coach Drew Famulak was the nation's only recipient
of the AHCA Terry Flanagan Award for his career work
*Senior forward Tommy Hill received the NCAA's Elite 89 Award for
having the highest grade point average at the Frozen Four
*Two players were honored as Division I All-Americans: Senior
goaltender Taylor Nelson (first team) and senior defenseman Chad
Billins (2nd)
*Senior defenseman Chad Billins was recognized as the CCHA
Scholar-Athlete Of The Year
*Three players received All-CCHA recognition: Chad Billins (1st),
Taylor Nelson (1st) and Jordie Johnston (2nd)
*The Bulldogs won three consecutive NCAA Tournament contests to
reach the national championship game
*Senior Chad Billins and junior Kyle Bonis were named to the 2012
Frozen Four All-Tournament Team
*FSU won its first six contests of the season to record the
program's best start since its inaugural CCHA season in 1979-80
*Senior defenseman Chad Billins was among 10 national finalists for
the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for excellence on and off the ice
*The Bulldogs secured the number one seed for the CCHA Tournament
and had a first-round playoff bye
*Four players were named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tourney
Team - Jordie Johnston, Garrett Thompson, Chad Billins, Taylor
Nelson
*The Bulldogs were the only team among five from the CCHA to
advance past the first round of the NCAA Tournament
*The Bulldogs had a team cumulative GPA of 3.4 for the fall
semester and were also active in several community service
projects
