Strong Ferris State Contingent Competing In This Week's 98th Michigan PGA Professional Championship

Big Rapids, Mich. - A strong contingent of golfers with ties to the Ferris State University men's golf program are competing this week in the 98th Michigan PGA Professional Championship.

Action in the PGA section championship opened on Monday at the Flint Golf Club and continues both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The top nine golfers qualify for the PGA Professional Championship next spring with the winner this week also earning an exemption into next summer's PGA Tour event in Detroit.

The Bulldogs are being represented this week by Bulldog alums Ben Cook and Ryan Bayer, who both helped FSU reach the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals during their collegiate career, along with current FSU head coach and alum Kyle Wittenbach in addition to former Bulldog head coach Michael Mignano.

Along with those four Bulldogs, the field also includes Ferris State alum and eight-time champion Scott Hebert of the Traverse City Golf & Country Club among others with ties to the university.

The field of the state's top PGA club and teaching professionals will play another 18 holes Tuesday before a cut to the low 60 scorers and ties. The final round in the 54-hole $55,000 championship is Wednesday.

The championship is one of essentially two tournaments in one. The low nine golfers at the end of the tournament – along with Hebert, four-time champion Jeff Roth and FSU alum Ben Cook of Yankee Springs Golf Course in Wayland who are exempt from qualification by the PGA of America based on past performances – will earn spots in the 2020 PGA Professional National Championship, April 26-29, at Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas. The low 20 finishers from that national championship move on to play with the best players in the world at next year's PGA Championship May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, Calif.
