Ferris State Falls On The Road In GLIAC Play At Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Ferris State University men's basketball squad fell to Lake Superior State by a 82-71 count on Monday (Feb. 16) night at the James Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs recorded 40 points in the paint and matched the Lakers with 42 points in the second half, but could not overcome a 40-29 halftime deficit.

FSU opened the game with a quick layup from Owen Hardy, assisted by Mykel Bingham, at 19:25 to take an early lead. Despite several turnovers, the Bulldogs managed to keep the game close, with Brandon Claerbaut hitting a three-pointer at 18:16 and then converting a layup in the final seconds of the half. They struggled with turnovers, committing 13 in the first half, which contributed to the Lakers leading 40–29 at the end of the half.

The Bulldogs initiated the second half with a strong 9-0 run, closing a deficit and tying the score at 40-40 by the 16:45 mark, highlighted by Hardy's layup and free throw following a foul. Despite this surge, the Lakers responded with a series of three-point shots, regaining the lead and extending it through successful free throws. Ferris State fought back with Bingham's three-pointer and a late push, closing the gap with a 3-pointer from Claerbaut. However, the half concluded with both teams scoring 42 points, and the game ended with LSSU on top, 82-71.

Bingham scored 19 points, recorded a game-high 12 rebounds, and added three blocks, showcasing strong defensive play. Hardy contributed 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Tae Boyd added 13 points, including one three-pointer. Claerbaut finished with 11 points, connecting on two shots from beyond the arc.

Omar Suleiman led the way for the Lakers with 24 points, hitting 7 of 14 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and converting all six free-throw attempts. Drew Hess added 18 points, making six 3-pointers from 11 attempts. Nino Carter-Smith contributed with 10 assists and five steals, showcasing his playmaking abilities. Karter Richards scored 15 points, connecting on 6 of 9 shots and recording two steals before fouling out. Harrison Sorrelle also added to the defensive effort with three steals and 10 points.

The Bulldogs will return back home for their final two home games of the regular season at Jim Wink Arena. FSU will host Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 3 p.m. (ET) before facing Michigan Tech on Monday (Feb. 23) at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
