Big Rapids, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) held a basketball schedule reveal web stream on Thursday (Nov. 12), announcing the respective men's and women's league schedules for the 2020-21 season.
The replay of the live stream is available on YouTube at the link below as approved schedules for the 2020-21 campaign were announced.
The 18-game league slate, which begins on Jan. 7, will feature back-to-back games against the same opponent each week, other than two travel partner weeks, with each school's men's and women's team facing the same opponent but trading off who's home and away. Unlike previous seasons, there will not be any GLIAC doubleheaders (men's and women's teams playing on the same day at the same location). If the men are at home against an opponent, the women will play on the road against that same opponent and vice versa.
Specific dates and times along with potential fan and spectator information is still to be announced.
The exact game dates and times for games have not been decided, giving each school flexibility to play their two games between the Thursday and Sunday time frame of that week. While the range is flexible, the games must be played on consecutive days.
Each member school will play one home game and one away contest against its travel partner (Lake Superior State for FSU). Those games are slated for January 26 and February 16. The remaining 16 games will consist of back-to-back contests against the same conference opponent at the same location.
The GLIAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors approved the winter and spring competition calendar Tuesday based on evolving COVID-19 testing, travel and venue protocols.
Winter sports that don't operate with a conference schedule, such as swimming & diving and indoor track & field, may compete according to normal NCAA guidelines, while men's and women's basketball will have a unique conference schedule that begins Jan. 7. Presidents and chancellors also allowed non-conference games prior to Jan. 1 to be scheduled at the institutions' discretion.
During the past several months, GLIAC athletic directors, athletic trainers and the league's COVID-19 Task Force have assembled safe competition protocols and several schedule revisions. The GLIAC is establishing consistent COVID-19 testing, safe training, travel, hosting and in-game protocols among its 12 members. Presidents and chancellors will make a final decision on testing requirements at a later date.
The Bulldogs will open league action the week of Jan. 7-10 against the Ashland Eagles with the men at home in Big Rapids and the women traveling to Ashland, Ohio. The complete schedules for both teams can be found below.
Stay tuned for additional information or changes as they become available.
