Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad found a way to win again on Sunday (Nov. 10) as the Bulldogs remained unbeaten with a 77-73 regional win over Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs improved to a nation-leading 5-0 on the year by capping a weekend homestand with a hard-fought win over the Battlers.
Alderson-Broaddus jumped in front early and led by as many as nine points only five minutes into the contest before FSU battled back and forged a 41-37 advantage at halftime.
The second half was back and forth as the Battlers responded and took the lead. However, Ferris State persevered and pulled ahead late to earn the win.
Junior guard Walt Kelser tallied 17 points and came up with six rebounds and four steals for FSU in the victory while Mason Pline came off the bench to pour in 16 points, including four three-pointers in addition to adding five boards.
The Bulldogs' Cole Walker posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards to go along with eight points each from freshman Deng Reng along with junior Dorian Aluyi and senior Greg Williams. Reng added seven board out of the starting lineup with Aluyi pulling down eight caroms overall.
Ferris State had only nine turnovers, but shot only 33.3% from the floor and 20.8% beyond the three-point line on five-of-24 shooting. The Bulldogs were good at the line, though, going 22-of25 (88%) in the win.
On the glass, FSU owned a 54-41 advantage and Ferris State pulled down 18 offensive boards to only eight for Alderson-Broaddus. The Bulldogs also forced 13 turnovers and came up with six steals along with four blocked shots.
Offensively, Ferris State dished out 19 assists, including six from senior guard D'angelo Hughes and three by Aluyi.
Alderson-Broaddus was led by Malik Bocook's game-high 20 points with KJ Walker adding 15 points and Bruce Spruell scoring 12 points. The Battlers were held to 34.9% shooting and went six-of-19 (31.6%) at the three-point stripe along with 23-of-26 (88.5%) from the line.
Ferris State continues its 10-game homestand on Wednesday (Nov. 13) night as the Bulldogs host Illinois Tech inside Wink Arena starting at 7 p.m. (ET).
