Ferris State National Champion TyQuone Greer Up For Sports Emmy Award As Part Of Documentary Film
Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's basketball alum TyQuone Greer (Chicago/Orr), who helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship a year ago, has been nominated for a 2019 Sports Emmy Award as part of the cast of the FOX documentary film "Shot In The Dark" that was released last year.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced the nominees for the 40th annual Sports Emmy Awards that will be presented on May 20 and "Shot in the Dark", which was executive-produced by basketball superstar Dwayne Wade and fellow Chicago native Chance The Rapper, is among five nominees in the Outstanding Long Sports Documentary category.
Greer starred in the 80-minute MAGNIFY documentary series film that followed his high school basketball squad and career at Chicago's Orr Academy. It has aired much of the past year at various times nationwide on Fox, Fox Sports and Fox Sports One among other outlets.
Set against their hometown of Chicago, the film follows Orr Academy's high school basketball team and its stars TyQuone Greer and Marquise Pryor as they aspire for greatness under inspirational head coach Lou Adams, facing systemic inequities that threaten to claim their future. Through incredible on and off-the-court challenges – from championship and collegiate aspirations to violence and incarceration — they assess the daily voices and influences of teammates, friends and family on their next steps as young men.
The film was produced by Los Angeles Media Fund, executive produced by Dwyane Wade and Chance the Rapper and directed by Dustin Nakao-Haider for Bogie Films, and in association with ZZ Productions.
Greer made the most of his final collegiate campaign at Ferris State in 2017-18 as he helped FSU to the school's first Division II National Championship. The Bulldogs matched an all-time NCAA record with a 38-1 mark and captured both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular Season and Tournament titles.
In his only season with the Bulldogs, Greer played in 33 outings, averaging nearly six points and three rebounds per game in a key role off the bench during the national championship season.
Before coming to Ferris State, Greer spent one year at the NCAA Division I level at Hofstra University following a junior college career at Daytona State College, where he twice earned All-Mid-Florida Conference accolades.
On the prep level, Greer was a second team all-state pick for Chicago's Orr Academy by the News-Gazette and a third team all-city selection by the Chicago Sun-Times. He averaged 16.9 points and 8.6 rebounds in his final prep campaign and ranked first on the team in scoring along with second in rebounding. Additionally, he ranked in the top 10 percent of his graduating class and was a two-time team MVP selection.
The 40th Annual Sports Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, May 20, at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York. Awards in more than 40 categories including Lifetime Achievement will be presented.
